Foul Fetchings & Flashing Lights

flashinglightsOnce upon a time in the land of Noodleville, lived a girl who took the “just wing it approach” too many times and entered into breeding season quite unprepared.

The air grew crisp, the leaves started to fall, the does started to cycle and there was no buck to call. No rank, musky stench on the air, and this poor gal was starting to despair….

Alright y’all, poetry isn’t really my strong suit, but ya get the gist of what I was trying to say.

It’s fall, I had no buck. Well, actually, I own a Nubian buck, the uber handsome Mr. Rocco, but he didn’t have a companion, so when he entered into the “man goat” phase of his life around 6 months old, I sent him to work for a friend until I needed him…

handsomebabyroco   handsomebabyroco2

Sweet baby Rocco before he turned into a “Man Goat”…

My dilemma was I needed a LAMANCHA buck, as that is my primary focus, and yet, here I sat with no earless boy to my name, and no true prospect in sight.

Just as I was getting frantically paranoid thinking of all the Numanchas I might get stuck with, along came an offer from a good friend and it was one I just couldn’t pass up.

Of course, as these things usually go, the timing was wrong, but I’m nothing if not determined, so I set out to make it happen at any cost. My dilemma was transportation. The big Ford truck had the welding rig set up on it with no room for goat hauling, and hubby’s schedule didn’t allow for him to remove it for me in a timely manner…

My car is a lil SUV… A Dodge Nitro that looks like a roller-skate.

dodgenitro

Yup.... I really was too lazy to snap a pic of my car so I stole a pic from Google…

Not an ideal animal transporter by any means, but I figured “What the heck, I’ve stuffed a goat in here before, why not do it again?”

Why not eh……? Well, I’ll answer that question for ya.

In the past, I shoved babies in crates in there and even an older doe… On tarps of course, and it worked well…. But this…. This happened to be a 3 year old, fully grown Lamancha buck, in full rut, in all his pee stained, musky glory.

Before I could ponder too hard on the ramifications of this move I was about to do, I wrapped everything in the car in tarps and took off down the road. A short 2 hours later, I arrive at Lynne’s ready to pick up Mr. Tall, Hairy & Stinky, also known as Avatar.

I hop out of the car as Lynne eyes my ride with a bit of doubt, and humorous disbelief…

“You’re going to put him in there?”

Yup…

“Will he fit?”

I can squish him if I have to… Desperation is a great motivator and I’ve worked too hard on collecting the Lamanchas I have to waste an entire year on “Numancha” mutt kids..

Lynne was kind enough to give me a tour of all her lovely animals……I may have fallen in love with a particular Alpine doe that I shouldn’t have since I’m supposed to be focusing on my Lamanchas, and I got to learn a new goatie skill as well….

I’ve been curious about trimming feet with an angle grinder, so Lynne pulled out hers and did Avatar’s feet for me before we loaded him up… Pretty spiffy, and I can’t wait to give it a go on my own…

avatarblog9

Dream-Fire LOX Avatar

Anywho… Now comes the loading part… Avatar is such a sweet, mellow boy…Walked right up to the car, but convincing him to hop into the confined world of plastic just wasn’t happening.

So, I grabbed a front leg, Lynne grabbed a front leg…

She then held him half way in while I went around, hung upside down over the back seat and pulled while she shoved the rear…. This lil acrobatic feat was followed by a swiftly closing door and I swear I could still hear Lynne laughing at the absurdity of the whole fiasco as I drove away with a smug look on my face.

Ok, ok… I’ll be honest… I’m not sure if I was actually wearing a “smug” look, or if my face was just contorted in disgust over the overwhelming, extremely pungent smell threatening to choke me out as I drove….… But none the less, I had a buck, a beautiful buck, with genetics I greatly admired, riding comfortably and quietly in the back of my car…

Rank smell be damned, I made it work and I was happy!!

I hit Dallas traffic at dark, trucking on along imagining what kids I’d get and what I thought they’d look like when my happy musings were interrupted by the flashing red and blues in my rear view mirror..

Well crap!

Pull over, get all the necessities gathered up and wait for the officer to approach…

The Officer peers into my window with his flashlight as I roll it down and he leans in, with partial words leaving his mouth before he interrupts himself with:

Officer: “Woah!!!!!!!...... Ma’am……. are you feeling well?!?!”

This statement was said with such genuine concern as he reeled backwards away from the pungent stench wafting from my car that I couldn’t help but to laugh…

“Yes sir officer, I’m feeling quite well, I’m just hauling a buck home and he’s a bit smelly”

Officer: “A buck??”

“Yes sir, a buck, a goat, he’s laying in the back, let me show you”

At this point, I roll down the driver side rear window and he peaks inside with his flashlight with a very doubtful look on his face…… You see, Avatar had made himself quite cozy and was laying down, out of sight, behind the seat…. You could just tell by the look on the poor officer’s face that he was highly doubting my sanity…. Not to mention he was wondering what awful medical condition I was suffering from to be emitting such a horrible smell and making up weird stories…

Just as the kind officer was about to question me, Avatar popped his stinky, earless head in all its golden bearded glory over the seat and said “Ehh-ehh-ehh”

Avatarsmile

I think Avatar has a sense of humor….lol

The startled officer jumped back and exclaimed “Holy crap, what the hell is that?!?!” as he eased in slowly for another look..

“I told you, it’s a buck, a goat, a Lamancha, I’m taking him home to breed my does”

Officer: “I’m sorry ma’am, that’s no goat, THAT looks like something off of Star Wars!”

avatarblog1 avatarhead1

To be fair, I GET the comparison he was trying to make, though it is a Stargate the movie creature he was thinking of, and not a Star Wars creature…. Of course Avatar is pretty, while the creature is quite hideous and only shares a vague resemblance..

He stares… looks at me, takes another look at Avatar, and while keeping his eye on Avatar, he ask me for my DL and insurance…. I couldn’t help but wonder if he was afraid the smelly beast would jump out and get him or what, but his reaction was absolutely priceless.

As he heads back to his car with my info, it dawned on me that throughout this entire exchange, I still had no clue why I was being pulled over…. Apparently the same thought dawned on him once he was away from Avatar, and so he returned my stuff and got down to business..

Officer: “Ma’am, are you aware that your insurance and DL have different addresses?”

“Yes sir, I just moved not too long ago and keep forgetting to change the address on my DL..”

Officer: “Your DL says “Noodle”…. I’ve never heard of it? That even a real town?”

“Well of course it’s a real town! I used to live there, you can Google it, and just to let you know how bonafide legit this town is, there’s even a blog about it online!”

Officer: “Who on earth would blog about a town called Noodle?”

“Me of course”

To this he laughs and says “Ok, ok, how to do I find this blog about this town of Noodle?”

So, I write down the address on the back of an old receipt and hand it to him…

Officer: “BTW- Did you know you were speeding? That’s why I pulled you over this evening.”

“No sir officer, I was not aware I was speeding… But I gotta ask you something….”

Officer: “What’s that?”

“Wouldn’t you be speeding too if you were locked up with this stench?!?!?!”

To this his busted out laughing and said: “Why yes ma’am, I do believe I would! I’ll give you this warning if you promise to watch your speed for the rest of the trip home, perhaps try cracking a window so you can survive and drive the speed limit…”

I thanked him, an Officer Daniels according to the written warning I received, and as a parting salute I told him to watch my blog as he was about to become a famous feature here at “The Adventures of Noodleville”.

As a farewell greeting he said: “You know, I’ve been a cop for the last 9 years, and I have to say this takes the cake for the weirdest traffic stop I’ve ever made, thanks for the laugh Noodle”

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

Happy to oblige Officer Daniels, and thanks so much for not making this foul fetching an expensive endeavor by adding a speeding ticket to it!

Now that you know the story of his arrival, I must gush a lil about this handsome boy! I wish I had got him earlier so I could clip him and show him off in his pretty clothes, but the weather is getting a bit chilly, so you’ll have to settle for shaggy, rutty buck pictures instead.

Dream-Fire LOX Avatar

He is SO SWEET and easy to handle….. I’ve never met a buck with a more laid back disposition. His first night here, he busted out, got in with the does, and bred Rosie, a NUBAIN……..but even that lil stunt couldn’t make me mad at this sweet boy. The following day (October 13th) he also bred Mocha, Tori, Tricks and Bleuberry (the Alpine). So he wasted no time getting to work and made the rounds tagging at least one doe from every breed I own… Not exactly thrilled with that, but I’m flexible and can work around it, so no worries.

Avatar & Rosie enjoying a bit of inter-breed, forbidden love….

Most of my Lamanchas have quite a bit of South Fork in them…… I love their animals, and Mr. Avatar just so happens to have a bit of South-Fork in his family tree too….. Here’s a lil picture pedigree for this handsome boy. His dam is the very lovely South-Fork Sweet Xcite, and if ya can believe it, she’s even prettier in person.

The Newest Earless Wonders of Noodleville

Not too long ago I posted a blog about being trapped in my barn and as an after thought tossed in info and pictures about my sweet Lamancha boy, "Tonka".

Yes, I know his earlessness is repulsive to some. My husband swears he's the ugliest thing on 4 legs.

I happen to disagree. I think he's simply adorable. He has the sweetest, goofiest disposition and is such a clown.

I had plans to add a doe for him...as mentioned in my recent "Hay Fairy" blog post, it would be such a shame for Tonka to be the only earless goat, and a virgin to boot! Can you just imagine how much hell he'd catch from the other boys?

That intention of adding a doe turned into adding TWO does (got a 2 for 1 deal that I simply could not pass up).

So, please meet my newest girls, Casper & Comanche. They are half sisters, same sire, different dams...Casper is a March 2011 baby, Comanche an April 2011 baby.

                                                  Aren't they just adorable?!?!

Both girl's have been dam raised and are a little bit timid, but I'm confident that a lil time and treats will have them won over.

Comanche, the youngest, is the bravest and was the first to approach us. She is an American Lamancha and though the pictures don't show it well, she's very dainty looking and has the prettiest dished face and big eyes. I have a feeling she's going to become the kids favorite thanks to her brave disposition.

Comanche

Casper

Casper is the older of the two and isn't as easily swayed as her sister.

Last night she wanted nothing more than to stay far away, but this morning she did come stand beside me and nose me a bit so she'll come around in time.....They haven't been with me for even an entire day yet, so the shyness and bewilderment of their new surroundings will pass as they settle in.

Casper is a PB Lamncha and is very well grown for her age (taller than my Alpine kid who is the same age).

Casper & Comanche

Casper chowing down on alfalfa pellets

I'm really excited to have these girls and am looking forward to amazingly adorable Lamancha babies late Spring.

Not to mention, that will, give me two more girls to milk..

Lamanchas, on average have nice level lactations and produce very rich, creamy milk.. They are only slightly behind the butterfat production of the average Nubian, and in general they produce more butterfat than my Alpines.

Not to mention I've noticed my Lamancha tolerates this horrible West Texas heat far better than my Alpines do, so I think Lamanchas are a perfect match for us.

Comanche enjoying her alfalfa pellets

I'm very happy with the condition these girls arrived in and the care the breeder gave was top notch. She stayed on top of coccidia prevention (hence the nice growth these girls have had), and used proper dewormers on the correct schedule..

All in all I think the breeder was great, very helpful, very professional, allowed me to test them for CAE prior to purchase.

I started this goat adventure with the Miniature Alpines....then added standard Alpines, and now Lamanchas.

Through all of this I've learned quite a bit. I started my herd with tested, CAE negative stock but in the begining I didn't know exactly what else to look for. Thanks to some dear friends and mentors I've got a better handle on what a quality dairy goat should look like, what to look for and what traits are undesireable.

Nothing I have is perfect, but I'm happy to say that with each purchase I've "bought smarter" and have gradually added better quality. I've found what I like, and don't like and I think I've figured out what direction I want to go in this endevor.

I have no intentions to show, but I want to produce quality, disease free goats that milk well. Shayla really wants to show, she's been going on and on about for a few weeks now and she is quite heartbroken that she's not old enough yet (she's 6 & she has to be 8 to join 4H) but I hope to produce goats that she will be able to proudly show and at least do well with in our local shows.

I no longer have Miniature Alpines.... I find I prefer longer legged, taller gals on the milk stand, easier for me to milk. So Tootsie, Keys & Ella have gone to my mom's and Houston will go soon as well.

Lilly, Sabrina's girl is being sold to a dear friend of mine to be a future home milker. It was a hard decision, but I simply can't afford to keep everything, and I'm very happy with her future home.....she'll be a spoiled mess I'm sure.

With Lilly gone that will leave me the Alpine trio & the Lamancha trio. I plan on retaining a Lamancha doe this kidding season, but have no plans to retain any Alpines as I only have room to expand so far and I've chosen to expand my Lamanchas.

At the moment I have Casper & Comanche in a 40ft x 10ft corral. This keeps them separate from the others so they can settle in without getting caught up in dominance games and this also makes them easier for us to catch & handle. We'll probably keep them separate for the first month at least, then we'll test the waters and see how they do with the others.

Lilly has just been bursting with curiousity, and I find it quite funny that she, like Sam when Tonka came home, is facinated (or perhaps confused) by the girl's ears (or lack of) Any time she's able to sniff them, she's bumping their tiny ears as if she's trying to figure out the new oddity...

Lilly meets Casper...Casper isn't impressed..

Held Captive in the Captivating Town of Noodle...

A day like any other day…I get the kiddos off to school, feed, milk, haul out hay, take care of the chickens and give the bottle bucks their bottles. After milking I put the milk on the stove on low heat to pasteurize (bottle kids get pasteurized milk).

While I’m waiting on the milk, I run out to the boy's pen to rinse out their water trough.

They are housed in a temporary kid pen….I have a large metal building that has 3 rooms…each one about 10’ x 12’. The boys pen is a 6ft tall chain link kennel about 20’ x 20’ bumped up against the last room of this metal building. It has a heavy sliding metal door that leads into the pen, and an old, very heavy, regular metal door that leads into the room. This was originally my rabbit room, but it’s the temp home for the chicks. It has 3 windows that we took out and securely attached fence panel to in order to keep predators out, but allow plenty of fresh air in.

Anywho… I intend on making a quick run out there, so I just slip on my flip flops. I’m trying to get things done in there, but the wind keeps blowing the door that leads into the building open. Frustrated I slam it closed as hard as I could so I could finish my work without having to round up escapee chickens.

This is at 8:15am.

By 8:20am I’m done and ready to head inside to check the milk on the stove, and maybe read a book while the house is quiet.

I can’t get out. The slammed door is jammed. No biggey…I’ll just tug harder!

8:45am- I’m having no luck with the door.. I’ve tugged, pulled, yelled, screamed…I’ve tied things to the door knob to pull with.. I’ve tried prying the door open with a piece of rebar.

No luck..the door is absolutely stuck.

I go to the window that borders my neighbors property.. I hear someone, so I yell for help, hoping Alan was home.. Out of luck there too! I hear someone get in a car and leave….that was my last chance for a quick exit.

I’m sweaty, my hands hurt……at this point the door is mocking me. I am getting angry.

I call my husband on my cell….no answer.

I rotate between calling and tugging the door.

9:10am - I give up. I accept the fact that I can not open the door.

I decide to go through the sliding door into the pen to climb the 6ft chain link.

After all, I was an awesome lil tree climber back in the day…a fence shouldn’t be a problem for a gal like me!

Back in the day was longer ago than I want to admit…the fence is more daunting than I originally thought.

Especially when I’m wearing flip flops and the horizontal bar that would make an ideal stepping stone is on the opposite side of the fence.

Trying with flip flops failed. So I kick them off and start up the fence…

My toes HURT, my feet HURT… I’m not equipped to climb fences barefoot, but I’m almost to the top…..I swing my right leg over the top, thinking I’m almost scot free..

Until IT happened….

Sam that is. My 70lb Alpine bottle buck wants to play! He’s got a mouthful of my jeans on my left leg and tugs..

I kick him away, try to keep my balance in such an odd position and he lets go.. Only to jump up on the fence, grab a bigger mouthful of jeans and dash away as fast as possible…bringing me with him!

My right leg hangs up on the top of the fence and in mere seconds I’m on my butt in the pen.

I’ve also discovered I am too old to be falling like that. I hurt all over, thankfully no broken bones, but my back and shoulder are throbbing with such intensity that I’m threatening to put Sam in the freezer and make fajitas!!

Okay, I did cry a bit….then I yelled and screamed and called Jerimiah again..

9:45am - Still can’t get Jerimiah to answer, and there isn’t anyone else I can call who can come save me in Noodle.

Not to mention, the further away I have to call someone in to rescue me, the bigger the embarrassment…

I decide to try getting the fence panels off one of the windows to get out that way.

Of course, I feared predators when I had my bunnies in there so we made sure the windows were VERY secure! So secure in fact I must have been out of my mind.

Apparently my irrational fear prompted me to secure the panels well enough to keep a damn bear out!

I can’t get them off…. I try all three windows, no luck. They are secured on with those giant, thick U shaped nail things…Like ginormous staples.. I’m sure they have a name, but at this point I don’t care what they are called…At this point I‘m convinced those staples thingy ma jigs are instruments of the devil, hell bent on holding me captive… I try everything I can think of and simply can not pry them off the fence panels…

I dig through the entire room looking for the bolt cutters…we just bought a new pair recently and used them to cut panels with.

9:50am- And I finally find the cutters….they’re OUTSIDE of the pen…completely out of reach! There they sit…just 2 feet out of arm’s reach on the outside of the boy’s pen….. they mock me with their promise of freedom just barely out of reach.

I hate them!

10:10am- I find a saw…just a regular hand saw but it’s SOMETHING. I begin to saw through the areas on the fence panel where it’s attached to the window frame so I can pull it off.

10:45am- Success! Finally!!! I get the panel pulled away enough to crawl through…well fall through the window, but at this point I’m not concerned about my mode of exit, as long as I’m out.

Get in the house, of course the milk that was on the stove pasteurizing has boiled over and there’s a thick burnt on mess of milk all over the stove top, so instead of relaxing, I have a huge mess to scrub up.

11:04am- Jerimiah calls!!!!!!! He left his phone in the truck while he was working….

“Hi Hon, I saw you called a few times, whatcha need??”

Oh NOW he calls!!! Now that I’ve escaped from being trapped in the barn for 2 hours and 25 minutes, he calls NOW!!! So much for that Knight in Shining Armor bit huh??

So I proceed to whine about my morning, hoping for some sympathy for my plight and for my aches, pains and bruises.. But NOOOOO!! I can’t even get all the way through my tragic tale because he’s in hysterics!

Ya know how several of my blogs have some lesson learned? This one is never go into an enclosed area without securing an exit for yourself!

What a morning!

In other news….. I’m excited! This week I went and picked up my newest addition!

I know, I know…I don’t need anything else, but this was a deal thrown my way that I simply could not resist…and since it fits in perfectly with my future plans, it’s not a pointless addition. I am changing some of my focus in regards to the goats. My mom is buying Tootsie from me, Lilly, Sabrina’s doe kid will be sold later on down the road and I plan to focus on Alpines and the earless goat breed known as LaManchas.

Their appearance can be off putting to many, but they are amazingly sweet, docile, laid back and amazing milkers with a high butterfat content to their milk. They are much more suited to the Texas heat than my Alpines and they are so odd looking they are cute!

I brought home an amazing lil buck that was a February baby and his name is “Tonka”. He’s an AI baby out of  +*B SG South Fork Toi Soilder who is listed as #1 on the ADGA Elite Lamancha Buck List. Had an awesome visit at his breeder’s farm, they were so nice, helpful and even gave me a lesson on how to tattoo a goat. Can’t wait to visit again in the spring.

Jerimiah is not smitten…nor is he impressed with his quality and the amazing sire he came from. Quite frankly, he thinks he’s the ugliest thing on 4 legs…But as always, he’s a great husband and humors me on my various insanities. I have a feeling Tonka’s sweet personality will win him over eventually.

I could not be more pleased with this boy…and I’m over the moon exited about my great start in LaManchas! Plan to add two does Spring 2012 which will give me an Alpine breeding trio and a LaMancha breeding trio which is all I’ll ever need.

Tonka is in the buck pen with Sam and they are getting along great. Sam is confused over the lack of ears…lol It’s been a few days and he still keeps nosing Tonka’s lil ear nubs as if to say “Hey man! What happened to your ears?” lol

Of course, here are pictures:
